Bangladesh set for first Test in India

Bangladesh set for first-ever Test in India

                                       Bangladeshteammates celebrate …
Bangladesh may play their maiden Test series in India later this year, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said on Tuesday.
India have not hosted Bangladesh for a Test match since the Tigers gained full status in 2000. Bangladesh's only visits to India have been for one-day internationals.
India have played seven Tests in Bangladesh, including the inaugural match in Dhaka in November 2000, but remain the only Test-playing nation yet to welcome the Bangladeshis at home.
Bangladesh cricket chief Mustafa Kamal informed his colleagues in the BCB that he had been assured by his Indian counterpart Narayanaswamy Srinivasan that India will host Bangladesh this year.
Kamal met Srinivasan on the sidelines of the Indian Premier League tournament and he had "received assurance that India will host Bangladesh for a full tour later this year", a BCB statement said.
There was no immediate comment from the Board Of Control For Cricket In India, and it remained unclear how India will accommodate Bangladesh in their crowded schedule.
India are due to host New Zealand in August-September for three Tests, take part in the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September-October, and then hostEngland for four Tests in November-December.
Bangladesh have lost 63 of their 73 Tests so far, winning only three, but opener Tamim Iqbal hopes his country will get to play five-day matches on a regular basis.
"If we want to really improve in Test match cricket, we need to play the format a lot more," Tamim, who is in India for the IPL, was quoted as saying by the Cricinfo website.

Former Major Leaguer Starts

Former Major Leaguer Starts Fundraising Site

Need a uniform? Need funds to travel to a tournament? How about money for college? Try asking your Twitter followers or Facebook friends. A new fundraising website, SimpleWayToFundraise, launched this week in beta mode. The site was created by former professional baseball player Jason Romano, who says money for sports tournaments was often difficult to come by when he was a youth sports player.
"We didn't grow up with much money and you have to travel to tournaments across the country," he said.

These days, if teens want a shot at making the major leagues or playing college baseball, they have to play travel baseball and complete in pricy tournaments to get noticed by recruiters.
"The low income families can't afford to play travel baseball," Romano said.
[More from Mashable: Tumblr Blog Sheds Light on American Housing Crisis]
Having car washes and selling door-to-door can be dangerous and time consuming, Romano says. Online fundraising is where the money's at.
The online fundraising websites space is a crowded one. There's DonorsChoose, Causes, Crowdrise, Kickstarter and many, many others.
Romano says what sets his website apart is the fact it is simple to use and has a sports bent. He said he wants it to be the go-to site when parents, kids or teams think about avenues to raise money for sports. Technically, anyone who needs to raise money can use the site, Romano says, but his passion is helping youth sports players.
SimpleWayToFundraise officially launches next week.
Here's how it works: Create a page and link it to your PayPal account. Write a little blip about yourself (or your child), why you're fundraising and how much money you'll need. You can add sponsors to the page, too. Then you'll get a custom link you can email out to friends and family, tweet and post on your Facebook Timeline.
Donations can be made in any amount -- there is no minimum and no maximum -- but the site does feature buttons for donations in the amounts of $25, $50 and $100. Donors can also be anonymous if they'd like.
Travel sports usually include showcases and tournaments where college recruiters look for top talent. These events cost about $300-$400 each. That's in addition to unforms (about $150), bats and equipment, and paying just to be on a traveling youth sports team (about $800-$1,200).
"The typical family, they probably spend about $4,000-$6,000 for one child for one summer" of travel baseball, according to Romano.
Romano played for the Dodgers, Rockies, Rays, Reds and Rangers during his 12-year career. With travel baseball being as expensive as it is these day, Romano says if he were a youth now, he wouldn't have been discovered.
"I had a chance to play professional baseball and live my dream," he said.
Romano's been collecting research and talking with numerous sports players for the past two years to figure out how to best develop the site. He's funding the project himself.
Currently, there are about 100 fundraising pages. Romano says he hopes to reach 5,000 fundraising pages by late summer and eventually wants to have 100,000 pages. Right now, the average donation is around $50, and the average fundraising campaign earns about $1,200-$1,300, he said.
What do you think about SimpleWayToFundraise? Would you use it? Tell us in the comments.

New hero in Virat Kohli

India finds a new hero in Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli's 183 off 148 balls helped India achieve …
Just when Indian cricket was pondering a future without its ageing batting superstars, Virat Kohli has emerged as the man ready to step in and take charge.
With Rahul Dravid having retired and Sachin Tendulkar and Venkatsai Laxman nearing the end of their glorious careers, India are desperate to find replacements during a tough transition period.
But the heroics of 23-year-old Kohli in Sunday's clash with Pakistan helped lift the gloom -- at least at the one-day level -- after an embarrassing period in Test cricket when India were whitewashed 4-0 in England and Australia.
Kohli is already being hailed as one of cricket's finest young batsmen after he anchored India to an astonishing one-day victory on Sunday night, their second in three weeks.
His 183 off 148 balls helped India achieve their highest chase in one-day cricket to overhaul Pakistan's formidable 330-run target with 13 balls to spare in the Asia Cup game in Dhaka.
The explosive knock followed the 86-ball unbeaten 133 against Sri Lanka in Hobart on February 28 that saw India chase down 321 in an incredible 36.4 overs to secure a bonus-point clinching win in the tri-series in Australia.
Kohli has now scored 11 centuries in 85 one-dayers, including three in the last four games, his 3,590 runs coming at an impressive average of 50.56.
Kohli's eight Tests so far have produced one century and an average of 32.73 after he burst into the star-studded middle-order on the tour of the West Indies last year when Tendulkar opted to rest.
Former India captain Kapil Dev said he was amazed at Kohli's talent and hunger for runs at such a young age.
"He has a long way to go to join the list of greats, but he has to be one of the most impressive young batsmen in world cricket," said Dev, India's first World Cup-winning skipper.
"He gets going when the going gets tough, and that is the hallmark of someone who has a lot of confidence in his talent and ability.
"Virat's real test will come when he goes through a bad patch. But for now, he can do nothing wrong and he must make full use of this opportunity," Dev told AFP.
Kohli's amazing run did not go unnoticed by England's Kevin Pietersen, his former Bangalore Royal Challengers team-mate in the Indian Premier League.
"An Indian superstar is rising if not already risen in ODIs. Take a bow Kohli," Pietersen tweeted.
Kohli is almost certain to replace Dravid at the vital number three place in Test cricket when India host New Zealand later in the year, and the youngster realises the enormous task that awaits him.
"Batting at number three is a very important position for the team," Kohli told reporters after Sunday's game. "I value my wicket much more now. It is all about setting a good platform and helping the team.
Vitat Kohli
Kohli's rise was welcomed by batting great Sunil Gavaskar, who sees him as the kingpin of India's future middle-order in Tests without Tendulkar and Laxman.
"When Kohli and Rohit Sharma were batting together against Pakistan, we saw the future of the Indian batting," Gavaskar said on television during the match.
"India is fortunate to have such talented batsmen in its ranks."
The victory on Sunday helped the reigning World Cup champions stay in contention for a place in the final against Pakistan, provided Sri Lanka beat hosts Bangladesh in Tuesday's last league match.
If Bangladesh win, they will go through to Thursday's title clash against Pakistan, knocking India out in the process. Sri Lanka are already out of the race after two consecutive losses.

Cricket makes LTE deal with Clearwire

Cricket makes LTE deal with Clearwire

Wireless operator Cricket Communications has inked a a five-year deal with Clearwire to provide 4G LTE mobile broadband services to Cricket customers. Cricket is already adding LTE to its own network, but by adding a wholesale agreement with Clearwire the company hopes to be able to offer LTE service to about two thirds of its network in the next two to three years. There’s just one catch: Clearwire isn’t actually operating any LTE service yet.
The companies did not disclose any financial terms of the deal.
“We believe this agreement with Clearwire provides us with an attractive option to supplement our own LTE build-out strategy and gives us the flexibility to access additional 4G capacity where needed as data-centric devices continue to become more popular,” said Leap Wireless president and CEO Doug Hutcheson, in a statement.
Clearwire is majority-owned by Sprint, and was initial set up as a provider of wholesale 4G services using WiMax technology — Clearwire (along with partners like Comcast, Intel, and Google) hoped to get a jump on the 4G game by having WiMax up and operational years before LTE became a growing concern. Although ClearWire did get WiMax up and running, long-term financial problems and bickering with Sprint inhibited widespread adoption — plus, almost the entire rest of the world decided to wait for LTE technology, rather than bet on WiMax. Clearwire announced plans to convert to add LTE technology to its network in August of last year; since then, Sprint signed on to lease capacity from Clearwire to supplement its own LTE network. Cricket becomes Clearwire’s second LTE customer.
Cricket launched its LTE services in Tuscon, Arizona, in late 2011. Cricket currently provides mobile services to about 7 million customers in the United States.
This deal doesn’t necessarily mean that Leap/Cricket LTE devices would be compatible with Sprint’s devices or network, or devices from Sprint-owned MVNOs like Boost and Virgin Mobile — Leap is an independent operator, although leasing LTE services from Clearwire does put it in Sprint’s sphere of influence.

Cricket, soccer club owners

Cricket, soccer club owners

Last week, Forbes released its annual list of the world’s billionaires, citing over 1,100 people who get to enjoy some of life’s great toys, from yachts and private jets to plush vacation homes.
The toy of choice for some: sports. If you’re a fan, being a billionaire means you can do even better than prime seats, valet parking and wait service. You can buy the team. In fact, if you’re Paul Allen, the original No. 2 guy at Microsoft worth $14.2 billion, you don’t even have to choose between the Pacific Northwest’s NBA and NFL franchises. You can have both.
Allen, ranked No. 48 on this year’s Forbes billionaires list (46 spots behind his old partner, Bill Gates), owns both the Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle Seahawks. That’s $1.4 billion in sports properties on his portfolio.
But while Allen’s net worth is enough to make him America’s wealthiest sports owner, it’s only good enough for No. 3 globally. Leading the pack of a list that extends across the world – from Asia to Europe to the U.S. – is India’s MukeshAmbani, whose $22.3 billion net worth makes him the second-richest man in Asia and 19th-richest in the world. The chairman of oil & gas conglomerate Reliance Industries is, unsurprisingly, a major fan if cricket, India’s most popular sport. In 2008 he bought the Indian Premier League’s Mumbai Indians. Ambani and Reliance have taken advantage of player auctions to upgrade the team, which won the Champions League Twenty20 tournament in 2011.

Mumbai Indians' co-owner Mukesh Ambani, center, mingles with players as his team wins during an Indian Premier League cricket match against Delhi Daredevils in New Delhi, India, Sunday, April 10, 2011.
(AP)
Right behind Ambani: Ukrainian mining and steel tycoon Rinat Akhmetov (the world’s 39th-richest person with a net worth of $16 billion), owner of FC Shakhtar Donesk, a soccer club in the Ukrainian Premier League that became the only team from Ukraine to capture a UEFA Cup championship in 2009.
In generating our list of the world’s richest sports owners, we stayed clear of those owning small minority stakes or who are otherwise uninvolved in running team operations. That list would include John Malone of Liberty Media, which owns the Atlanta Braves, and David Thomson of Thomson Reuters, which owns the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets through True North Sports & Entertainment.
